Some families will naturally be more involved than others, due to other family or job obligations. However, it is the role of the teacher to engage all families as much as possible so that they are fully aware of the instructional process and of the specific progress of their student. Teachers should establish relationships with students by communicating about these things. They should also invite parents to be involved in the educational process itself. Family involvement is generally more prevalent at the elementary level than at the secondary, but it is just as important for parents to remain involved through high school. The effort that teachers put into reaching families shows how much they care for the student. This is one of the most important qualities that a teacher can demonstrate in order to be a teacher of impact. Elements of this include:
Information about the Instructional Program
As much as possible, information about the instructional program and process should be delivered to parents, in a manner that they can understand.
Information about Individual Students
Parents are the first teachers of their students, so naturally one of the things they value most is frequent, accurate, and honest information about the progress of their child.
Engagement of Families in the Instructional Program
A variety of opportunities should be available for parents to be involved in their child's education. These should be both frequent and successful.
