As in all professions, teaching is always growing and changing, and so teachers must do so as well. In order to become most effective and lead colleagues, teachers must be intentional about growing and developing professionally. Content, pedagogy, and information technology are ever teaching, meaning teachers must be up-to-date on these things. One way to do this is to learn from other educators through joint planning, study groups, and lesson study. These activities also allow for job-embedded professional development. Another way for educators to grow is to belong to professional organizations, read professional journals, attend educational conferences, and take university classes. As teachers gain expertise, they can better contribute to their students, colleagues, and the profession. Elements of this include:
Enhancement of Content Knowledge and Pedagogical Skill
Teachers can become up-to-date by taking courses, reading professional literature, and remaining current on pedagogy.
Receptivity to Feedback from Colleagues
Good teachers should be actively pursuing support and feedback from professional networks.
Service to the Profession
Teachers are continually improving their practice, leadership, and support by actively participating in professional organizations.
